The month of June was chosen for LGBT Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall riots, which occurred at the end of June 1969. Wilson originated the idea, served as founder on the first coordinating committee, and chose October as the month of celebration. It was founded by Missouri high-school history teacher Rodney Wilson.
